Harlan Teklad TD.01432
Fenbendazole is added to Harlan Teklad Global 18% Protein
Rodent Diet at 150 mg/kg to produce Harlan Teklad
TD.01432. This diet may be used as an effective treatment for
pinworm infections which are still commonly found in
populations of rats, mice and other rodent species used for
biomedical research. Administering medication through diet
ensures proper dosing, prevents missed treatments and
reduces labor costs compared to other methods.
Directions
The diet contains 150 ppm fenbendazole to ensure a
minimum dose of 8 mg/kg body weight. Irradiated diet may
be fed to both mice and rats, but autoclaved diet only to mice.
There is significant destruction of fenbendazole during
autoclaving which could result in inadequate dosing of rats
that consume less diet per unit of body weight compared to
mice.4

The medicated diet is typically fed for seven consecutive days
followed by an additional seven consecutive days on the
regular nonmedicated diet. This should be repeated for a minimum of three cycles (minimum 42 days).2 Environmental decontamination does not appear to be
essential for successful eradication of pinworms.1,3

Fenbendazole
Fenbendazole {[5-(phenylthio)-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl]
carbamin methyl ester} has been used successfully for over 20
years in a variety of animal species, and has been proven to be
a highly efficacious broad-spectrum anthelmintic with
adulticidal, larvicidal and ovicidal actions. It has been proven
effective against rat pinworms Syphacia muris, mouse
pinworms S. obvelat and Apsicularis tetraptera, the Syrian
hamster pinworm S. mesocricetus, and the Mongolian gerbil
pinworm Dentostomella translucida.3 According to the drug
manufacturer, the maximum
tolerated dose in rats and
mice exceeds 10,000 mg/kg of
body weight. No clinical
symptoms or pathological
effects were observed in rats
fed 2500 mg/kg body weight
orally for 30 consecutive days
or 1600 mg/kg body weight
for 60 days, followed by 2500 mg/kg body weight for 30
additional days. No teratogenic effects were found in pregnant
rats fed 2500 mg/kg body weight. Fenbendazole can also be
added to other standard diets that we produce. Other
medications can also be added to various diets. For more

Product Description - Panacur® granules (22.2% Fenbendazole) are added to our
Teklad Global 18% Protein Sterilizable Diet as a practical and effective means to
eradicate pinworms. Designed to supply approximately 150 mg of Fenbendazole
per kilogram of diet, Teklad Global 18% Protein Sterilizable Diet with
Fenbendazole is a fixed-formula diet designed to withstand autoclaving or
irradiation, and to retain the nutrient composition and balance necessary to
support the efficient growth, maintenance and reproduction of research rodents.
To assure adequate nutrient levels and balance, additional supplemental levels of
the most labile vitamins [vitamin A, thiamine, pantothenic acid, and vitamin K
(menadione sodium bisulfite complex)] are included to compensate for losses of
these nutrients during autoclaving or irradiation. Read the directions section
prior to use. This product contains no animal protein, making it very low in
nitrosamines. TD.01432 contains no alfalfa meal and reduced levels of soybean
meal thus lowering the occurance of natural phytoestrogens.
