Harlan Teklad also manufactures and stocks diets for less commonly used laboratory animals including cats, ferrets, woodchucks and for ruminants such as sheep, goats and cows.

Cats

Harlan Teklad Global Cat Diet (2060) is specifically formulated to provide the proper balance of all knownCat nutrients considered essential for growth, maintenance, and reproduction of research cats.

The diet provides uniform nutrition and is a fixed-formula diet designed to minimize the nutrient variances which otherwise could occur if the ingredient composition of a diet were altered from one batch to the next.

Unusual Nutritional Requirements---Cats have unusual nutritional requirements. They cannot convert tryptophan to niacin effectively, cannot convert beta carotene to vitamin A, nor can cats desaturate linoleic acid. They require an escalated level of protein, and the amino acid taurine is needed to prevent ocular lesions and dilated cardiomyopathy. Harlan Teklad Global Cat Diet is designed to meet these special needs. In addition, it is formulated to be low in magnesium and ash, and high in meat protein to produce an acidic urine, which reduces the risk of feline urinary syndrome.

Harlan Teklad Global Cat Diet provides complete and balanced nutrition to the Harlan colonies of virus antibody-free laboratory cats. Unlike other cat foods, it does not contain meat substitutes, artificial flavorings, excessive grains, chemical colorings, or fillers.
Cats normally consume small portions of food throughout the day, and they have a normal propensity to consume minimal amounts of water. It is crucial that fresh and clean food and water be kept easily accessible to cats at all times.

Feeding Directions---Harlan Teklad Laboratory Cat Diet is a complete diet for cats and kittens. Ad libitum access to diet should be provided at all times. Fresh water always should be available to each animal.

Shelf Life---The recommended shelf life of Harlan Teklad Global Cat Diet is six months from the date of manufacture. However, shelf life may be affected by storage conditions. To achieve optimum shelf life, store the diets in a cool, dry, pest-free area away from hazardous materials.

Ferrets

Harlan Teklad Global Ferret Diet (2072) is specifically formulated to provide the proper balance of all known nutrients considered essential for growth, maintenance, and reproduction of research ferrets. Ferret

The diet provides uniform nutrition and is a fixed-formula diet designed to minimize the nutrient variances which otherwise could occur if the ingredient composition of a diet were altered from one batch to the next.

Nutritional Requirements---Ferrets are obligate carnivores with a very short intestinal tract. It is assumed that like cats, ferrets cannot desaturate linoleic acid. For these reasons it is generally recommended that ferret diets contain high amounts of animal protein and fat. The amino acid taurine is supplemented in the diet as a safety measure against developing ocular lesions and dilated cardiomyopathy. Harlan Teklad Global Ferret Diet is designed to meet these special needs containing a large amount of poultry by-product meal and poultry fat. In addition, it is formulated to be low in magnesium and ash, which reduces the risk of urinary disease.

Harlan Teklad Global Ferret Diet provides complete and balanced nutrition to the Harlan colony of virus antibody-free laboratory ferrets. Unlike lower quality ferret diets, it does not contain meat substitutes, artificial flavorings, grains, chemical colorings, or fillers.
Ferrets normally consume small portions of food throughout the day, and they have a normal propensity to consume minimal amounts of water. It is crucial that fresh and clean food and water be kept easily accessible to ferrets at all times.

Feeding Directions---Harlan Teklad Global Ferret Diet is a complete diet for jills, and kitts. Ad libitum access to diet in a self-feeder. Fresh water always should be available to each animal.

Shelf Life---The recommended shelf life of Harlan Teklad Global Ferret Diet is six months from the date of manufacture. However, shelf life may be affected by storage conditions. To achieve optimum shelf life, store the diets in a cool, dry, pest-free area away from hazardous materials.

Woodchucks (Groundhogs)

Harlan Teklad Woodchuck Diet (7778) is specifically formulated to meet the needs of woodchucks although the diet may be appropriate for feeding to other small mammals with similar feeding ecologies. Woodchuck

The diet provides uniform nutrition and is a fixed-formula diet designed to minimize the nutrient variances which otherwise could occur if the ingredient composition of a diet were altered from one batch to the next.

Nutritional Requirements---Woodchucks live in open grasslands, pastures and woodlands. In the wild they are exclusively herbaceous, consuming primarily tender green plants such as clover and grasses. They may also consume roots, bulbs, and seeds. Harlan Teklad Woodchuck Diet like the woodchuck’s natural diet is composed only of plants. Ingredients derived from animal products or by-products are excluded. Like the natural diet of the woodchuck, Harlan Teklad Woodchuck Diet contains a high amount of fiber.

Feeding Directions---Harlan Teklad Woodchuck Diet is a complete diet for woodchucks at all life stages. Woodchucks should be allowed ad libitum access to diet. The woodchuck will vary its food intake as its need for energy and nutrients. Woodchucks will vary their food intake profoundly as reproductive activity, basal metabolism, body fat, and total body weight change dramatically from season to season. Woodchucks put on a thick layer of fat in the weeks leading up to hibernation which begins in September/October and ends in mid-February. Fresh water should be available at all times.

Shelf Life---The recommended shelf life of Harlan Teklad Woodchuck Diet is six months from the date of manufacture. However, shelf life may be affected by storage conditions. To achieve optimum shelf life, store the diet in a cool, dry, pest-free area away from hazardous materials.

Ruminants

Harlan Teklad Ruminant Diet (7060) is specifically formulated to provide the proper balance of all known nutrients to a variety of laboratory ruminant species.

The diet provides uniform nutrition and is a fixed-formula diet designed to minimize the nutrient variances which otherwise could occur if the ingredient composition of a diet were altered from one batch to the next.Goat

Nutritional Requirements---Ruminants require significant fiber to maintain proper rumen health. Sheep have a requirement for copper but are also very susceptible to copper toxicity. Harlan Teklad Ruminant Diet is high in fiber to support microbial fermentation and maintain proper rumen function. The diet has a low copper content easily exceeding the copper requirements of most ruminants while avoiding copper toxicity in sheep.

Feeding Directions---Harlan Teklad Ruminant Diet is a complete diet for a variety of laboratory ruminant species and should generally be fed daily at 2-3% of body weight depending on the desired rate of gain. Fresh water always should be available to each animal particularly during warm summer days.

Shelf Life---The recommended shelf life of Harlan Teklad Ruminant Diet is six months from the date of manufacture. However, shelf life may be affected by storage conditions. To achieve optimum shelf life, store the diet in a cool, dry, pest-free area away from hazardous materials.
